MESA Day

MESA Day at CSULB is a festival of learning, competitions, & fun activities, that spark interest in careers related to the fields of Math, Science, and Engineering. MESA Day is an opportunity for students to compete for awards at local and regional levels. Competition rules are grade-specific and reinforce the California State Board of Education Math and Science standards.

Virtual Competitions

Thank Tank

Imagine a world without harmful emissions and pollutants where all vehicles are Zero Emission. Students will research zero emission technology and create a design concept which conceptualizes this future.

Math Escape Challenge

Students will collaborate to solve challenging math
problems while navigating through a virtual escape room with the goal of “escaping” the quickest.

Coding Solutions

Students will test their problem solving skills and their knowledge on the fundamentals of programming through this competition.

In-Person Competitions

Cargo Glider

Students will design and construct a glider with a payload that, when launched by the Launching Mechanism, flies through the air, goes over an obstacle and lands on a target.

MESA Machine

Students will design and construct a complex machine that utilizes different sequential and dependent actions from designated categories of energy/simple machines.

Moon Base

Students are tasked with designing a structure with a safe zone for an astronaut. They will design and construct an original structure that is lightweight but can withstand the highest amount of impact.

National Engineering Design Challenge

For this project, student teams will identify an individual or group who experiences some type of inequity (i.e., a user). Teams will employ human-centered design practices to engineer a solution.

Crime Scene Science PILOT

Students will collaborate using their knowledge of science to solve a new mystery. They must also design and construct DNA and Plant Cell models that test their science skills.
